"Developing a photographer's eye"

I have signed up with an organization called The Compelling Image to teach an online course about photography. It's called "Developing a photographer's eye," and will guide students through a series of 4 lessons and photo assignments to improve their photography skills. Students have to be able to upload photos so that we can discuss the work online. It lasts 4 weeks and should be fun! My focus is going to be on understanding the elements, such as light, depth of field, and composition, that make up a photograph so students can then use those tools to create more expressive images. We will also discuss how to evaluate ones own photos, something many people find difficult to do. And there will be more. The complete description will be up on the site soon, for now there's an outline.

photojournalists talk about Iraq A few new articles by photojournalists that tell stories about Iraq and Iraqi refugees. They also reflect on what it means to be a foreign photographer documenting conflict and tragedy. (I would love to see also an article by an Iraqi about covering the war.) They are heartbreaking but illuminating pieces. + Klavs Bo Christensen, a Danish photographer, writes about Iraqi refugees in Syria in the Digital Journalist. Two of Klavs' excellent photographs appeared on the cover and inside of Middle East Report issue 241, Winter 2006, "Iran: Looking Ahead". photography workshops ... everywhere Today I went to see a photo exhibit and video screening at a café in Hamra, T-Marbouta. It was put on by the organization Lens On Lebanon, which was established after the war between Hizballah and Israel last summer. The group holds workshops on video and photography, exhibited today were some of the results. The general idea is to give people the means to represent themselves and reflect on their lives. I’ll go back to look again at the photos and texts on the walls, it was a bit too crowded because of the video screening. One set of photos and interviews I glimpsed on my way out was about the effect on kids of the summer war. A boy who was interviewed, Tareq Qdouh, was asked, "Was your house totally destroyed?" He replied "No, it wasn't totally destroyed because of God's blessing, and I was happy because my Playstation wasn't bombed and it resisted." I laughed. I like how even objects can be endowed with the power to resist aggression when one is trying to make sense of the craziness of war.
